Over 18,000 acres of water and 285 miles of shoreline make Mark Twain Lake Northern Missouri's largest lake. The construction of the Clarence Cannon Dam on the Salt River in Ralls County in 1984 formed the lake, which is situated about 120 miles (200 km) NorthWest of St. Louis. About 36,000 acres of public land surround the lake. Many boatramps, campsites, and trails are available for use by the public, year round. Much of this land is also open to hunting when in season.
